My friend Michele and I went to see Melissa in concert at Chastain Park in Atlanta Friday night. Outstanding concert. If she is coming to a city near you, make plans to see her. Great music and inspiration.
Tom Price once again voted against even the majority in his own party against a bill to help communities improve their wastewater systems. Tom Price: too far right for his district. [Previous post] [Washington Post U. S. Congress Votes Database]

Tom Price is the elected Representative from my Georgia district in suburban Atlanta. He almost always votes with the very far-right of the Republican Party. I have decided to start posting his key votes that depart from the Republican majority opinion because I think most people don't know how extreme he is. This is the first major vote so far in the new Congress.
Vote 32: H R 5: This bill would lower the interest rate on student loans. The legislation would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 and decrease the interest rate on federally subsidized student loans from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent in stages over five years. It would impact undergraduate student borrowers in the Federal Family Education Loan and Direct Loan programs....The House passed the bill on Jan. 17, 2007, with a vote of 356-71. All House Democrats voted for the bill, joined by 124 Republicans. [Washington Post]
Price voted No.
My UCC pastor knows this Lutheran minister here in Atlanta and had shared some of his journey earlier with my church. What would Jesus do? What would YOU do? Schmeling's partner is a UCC pastor.
Many in the 350-member Atlanta [St. John's Lutheran Church] congregation say they don't plan to let the Rev. Bradley E. Schmeling leave the pulpit Aug. 15, as ordered last week by an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) disciplinary committee because he is in a gay relationship. Defying the order could end Atlanta's oldest Lutheran church affiliation with the ELCA.... [Washington Post]

Do you buy products made locally? Is there anything made in your area that you love?
In the summer, I was buying much of my produce at a local farm, but the family who owned it moved to Florida to run another farm last year.
One of my favorite beers is a local Atlanta brew, Sweetwater 420, although I am usually a Guinness guy.
Effect: Save lives and property that are needlessly disrupted through the use of a violent techniques for non-violent situations, which are too often drug raids based on bad information.

As a part of my participation in my church social justice group, I co-led a 3-hour advocacy and lobbying workshop. Although it was open to the public, we had a total of ten member of our church present. (We thought having more than five people was great on such a beautiful Saturday afternoon.)
We had a good overview of what is involved in lobbying and the role of advocacy in a faith community. Both the religious and political beliefs of our UCC congregation are very diverse in a largely conservative suburban metro Atlanta county setting. We are an open and affirming congregation, welcoming gay and lesbian Christian members.
One of my presentations was a PowerPoint presentation. If I can figure out how to post it on Vox, I will.
